Milestones in Motion: How Gym Classes Support Child Development

At Rolly Pollies, we know that every tumble, climb, and song is a building block for your child’s growth. For more than 20 years, families in Western New York have trusted us to guide children through their earliest milestones with classes that combine fun, movement, and developmental science.
Here’s how our structured gym classes nurture growth from infancy to early school years.

Infants (4 Months – Walking): Building Confidence From the Start
Our Caterpillars Classes have children busy exploring the world through their senses and movement. In these classes, children practice:
 • Tummy time and crawling for core strength and coordination.
 • Grasping, swinging, and rolling to prepare for walking.
 • Songs and group activities that build social awareness and early communication.
Grown-ups join in, making this a bonding experience while your child builds essential motor patterns.

Toddlers (Walking – 3 Years): Learning Through Play and Practice
Through our Bumblebees and Butterflies Classes children explore their independence, engage in parallel play, and participate in group activities.  This child lead class format helps children improve their balance, control, and focus. Classes emphasize:
 • Climbing and jumping to strengthen muscles and improve coordination.
 • Rolling, swinging, and hanging to develop the vestibular system.
 • Following two-step directions to prepare for preschool success.
Our instructors guide toddlers with patience and energy, showing them that practice builds confidence.

Preschoolers (3 Years): Strength, Social Skills, and Self-Esteem
At 3 years, children are eager to test their independence and abilities. In our Beetles classes, children practice:
 • Tumbling and balancing skills that support gymnastics foundations.
 • Strength and flexibility exercises tailored to growing bodies.
 • Cooperative games and teamwork to build friendships and self-esteem.
This grown-up and child becomes more structured and intentionally instructional as children develop their listening skills. Small group exercise stations imean every child gets individual attention from our Roll Models.

Early School Age (4 - 6 Years): Independence and Skill Development
Older Gymbugs are ready for bigger challenges. The Grasshoppers classes focuses on:
 • Progressive gymnastics and movement skills that develop discipline and persistence.
 • Strength and flexibility training that supports all sports and school readiness.
 • Problem-solving and resilience as children master new equipment and sequences.
By this stage, children leave class with more than physical skills, they gain confidence that carries into every part of their lives.

Why It Matters
Every stage of childhood is a window of opportunity. Research shows that active play:
 • Supports brain development and attention in the classroom.
 • Strengthens social and emotional skills like sharing and cooperation.
 • Lays the foundation for a healthy lifestyle that lasts.
At Rolly Pollies, movement isn’t just fun, it’s essential to helping your child grow, explore, and build skills and confidence that last a lifetime.
